Heading to the mall for a swim?

Yes, you read that right: we’re building a swimming pool in a strip mall! Even before COVID-19, brick and mortar retail spaces were contending with disruption and structural change. ‘For Lease’ signs are common in strip mall unit windows, and it is estimated that by 2022 one in four malls could close. Where does that leave these empty, unused spaces? Primed for adaptive reuse and innovative strategies that offer environmentally positive sustainable solutions to benefit everyone.

Malls are typically located near major transportation corridors close to urban centres and include ample parking, making them prime real estate. When you have a receptive client, a flexible landlord, and an ambitious design team, the opportunity arises to create an exciting plan to turn a commercial retail space into a swim academy!

The Republic team worked with Aqua Essence to identify their programming and spatial needs, to assist them in finding the right space to accommodate their new pool. We’re excited to see that news of their launch is making a big splash, and we look forward to sharing more with you as construction progresses.
